The truth about the legendary Vietnam's pilot, U.S. planes killer

Every time  fly to the North Vietnam, against the Vietnam fighter pilot is always an obsession with American pilots. One of them, the American pilots were each transmission is legendary pilot "Colonel Toon" - a level reached Ace pilot (aircraft kill 5 or more).

Legend was born

During the confrontation between the Vietnam People's Air Force and Navy pilots of the United States, the American pilots frequently recorded images MiG-17 aircraft bearing number 3020, as well as the MiG-21 bearing number 4326, with 13 red star symbol on the nose, the expression has shot down 13 enemy aircraft.
The U.S. pilots said the planes it's due to a pilot Vietnam People's Air Force control. In these times captured signal contact or exchange between ground between the pilots together, they often hear the word "Toon" or "Tomb" was often repeated. They claim that it is the name of the legendary pilot. From the myth of the super pilots nicknamed the "Toon" was born.

The Mig carrying signs 3426, terror of American pilots

The obsession of the U.S. pilots to "Toon" from 1967 through to 1972. In conversations with each other, they continually repurposed into this legendary name. "Toon" is "style" rank "colonel", even for their assigned "Nguyen" is very specific to Vietnam. Some documents also indicate his Vietnamese name is "Nguyen Tuan". Rumors have little effect on the psychology of the American pilots, resulting in no rush to bomb the target, or when avoidance is not seen combat MiG appear.
Until the day 05.10.1972, the MiG-17 bearing number 3020 has been the F-4 Phantom II of the U.S. Navy by Lt. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (pilot) and Lt. William "Irish" Driscoll (navigator) shot down. Since then, the myth of "Colonel Toon" in the new U.S. Navy pilot ends.
Some people believe that this is the pilot  Dinh Ton or Pham Tuan, as the pilots called almost rhymes with "Toon". However, this is the pilot is trained to raid B-52 not in favor of air war, so the plane was shot down by them is not enough to put into the "ace".
Typically, the only American pilot a remote control airplane, except aircraft shot down or damaged, they just moved to another aircraft control. Conversely, due to very low number of aircraft, pilots Vietnam often turns common aircraft used for fighting. Most of the aircraft was shot down enemy are high feats of many different pilots control it. This leads to the assumption of U.S. Navy fighter pilots to form "Colonel Toon".

The Mig 21 signing 3426  today

The number of pilots awarded the title of Ace Vietnam higher U.S.
According to some researchers, the name "Toon" or "Tomb" is not a name Vietnam. They think it might just be a radio signal interference often occurs due to be repeated several times to the American pilots mistaken it is the name of the pilot. In fact, the exchange of communications between the pilots and ground Vietnam never use real names but use the alias to refer to the location or fleet of aircraft.
But after the war, some of the information published Vietnam. Accordingly, MiG-17F aircraft bearing number 3020, the regiment was 923 Yen The. This aircraft has a patchy green livery, was American pilots known as Green Snake in the livery of the aircraft of the same type. This aircraft pilots are more turns and they control it shot down at least eight enemy aircraft in the aircraft.
Two of the pilots that were identified as Nguyen Van Bay (nicknamed Seven A) and Le Hai. Both are ranked Ace Pilots: Nguyen Van Bay are confirmed shot down seven enemy planes, Le Hai shooting down 6 . Both later were Hero, are alive after the war and were granted Colonel style. But the pilot was Randy "Duke" Cunningham and William "Irish" Driscoll shot down, there is no published information.
As for the MiG-21PF bearing number 4326, currently on display at the ack-ack museum, airports Bach Mai, Hanoi, each of the 921 regiment of the Red Star. The aircraft was also confirmed by many pilots are alternately used and has defeated 13 enemy aircraft. Later, of which 6 each control pilots this aircraft was Hero, including pilots Nguyen Van Coc is confirmed to be shot down 9 enemy units (U.S. admitted 7), highest in  Vietnam Air Force.
However, the record of the Vietnam People's Air Force belongs to MiG-21 PF 4324 number of 921 groups, used by 12 different pilots, who fought off 69 times, 22 times to fight, 25 fire-to-air missile, shot down 14 American aircraft during the period 11/1967 to 5/1968.
This aircraft is "lucky" because it is not only the number of aircraft shot down by its highest (14 units) that 3/4 pilots  shot down the enemy. Of the 12 pilots had control of this plane, with 9 people were shot down enemy planes, 8 pilots reach level  Ace, 7 who was honored hero, 5  who became generals. This aircraft is now on display at the Military History Museum in Hanoi Vietnam.
After Vietnam's open-door policy implementation, a number of former American pilots to Vietnam to learn, and has confirmed Colonel Toon is an imaginary character of American pilots and often they give making small talk topics. As a good will of the American pilots, Colonel Toon is a synthesis of the great pilot in Vietnam, like the "solo artist" lonely night bombing during World War II is called "Washing Machine Charlie" so.
Compared power relation between Vietnam People's Air Force and the U.S. Air Force is so lame all the equipment, quantity and combat experience. However, it is noteworthy that young Air Force pilots with only a few hundred hours of flight meager to win glorious victories prior to the American Air Force pilots. 16 Vietnam pilots recognized title Ace (the number of pilots shot down enemy planes from  5 and more), including 13 pilots MiG-21 and 3 pilots MiG-17 . In contrast, the number of U.S. pilots reached ace title only 5 people.
So why the Vietnam pilots scored more goals than the U.S. pilots? Perhaps the first reason is the number. In 1965, the Air Force Vietnam only 36 MiG-17 with an equal number of pilots, then in 1968 they had 180 and 72 MiG pilots. Six "squad" brave pilots faced 200 F-4  of 8, 35 and 366 crews, about 140 F-105 the thunder god of the 355 and 388 squadron of the U.S. Air Force and approximately 100 units of the U.S. Navy (F-8, A-4 and F-4) from carrier duty in the Tonkin Gulf, for both active duty air support (EB-6B - jamming , HH-53 - parachuting pilot study, "Skyraider" two in close support).

Aircraft F-4 The ghost of the U.S. Air Force

Thus, Vietnam pilots obviously "busy" than the competition, and at the same time they are easy to find more targets to kill, and they are important to the spiritual battle "to fight to the sacrifice" . They do not have to go home, because it was their home and - Fatherland. American pilots flight 100 sorties every visit back home, in addition to coaching is about, to receive command or the hundred other miscellaneous things. When turned, not everyone is ready to fight.

Since the U.S. began development programs air to air missile AIM-7 Sparrow medium-range missiles and short-range air-to air AIM-9 Sidewinder lead by  infrared early 1960s, American designers have rushed  said that the close-range (dogfight) will backwards into past. Thus, far - range missile weapons are going to finish off an opponent without the dogfight at close range. The fighter was designed in the early 1960s period as F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief was not equipped gun machine.Of course, this is a fatal mistake that Americans have paid dearly in the field Vietnam. The ground attack aircraft F-105, despite supersonic speeds but became easy prey for the fighter's agility Vietnam as the Air Force MiG-17 and MiG-21.
